Writer's Block: Holiday blues
[info]theturdmaster

What is the most emotionally challenging aspect of the holidays for you? Do you enjoy this season more or less than you did as a child?

View 742 Answers

I'm definitely going to have to say less than I did when I was a child as there isn't really the "magic" to it now that there was when I was really quite young (and still believed in Santa).

It's rather strange this year as I think most people are definitely in a "bah, humbug" mood. There have been approximately ZERO cards given out at work (I'll give some out as soon as I receive one, just one!) which is odd as yeah, it's a bit weird to sit there without anything even remotely Xmassy on your desk. The shops are all pretty festive and dealing with the crowds and not kicking the footballs... I mean, err children around when they deliberately run right infront of your feet can be challenging.

It generally is a family time of year though which for me sucks a bit as I've not really got any family other than the standard nuclear family. No extended family whatsoever and the family members who I do have are rather annoying... they'll yell the usual crap of "it's a party" when in reality it's a boredom fest and both my gran and I will take a big swig of whatever it is that we happen to be boozing up on.

Even more sewing...
[info]theturdmaster
This first one is for my gran for Xmas as she likes colourful birds - I had been intending to get it framed but trying to find a square frame in a shop is proving to be rather difficult.

As usual, my camera sucks!

The second one is a small but intricate design that I liked the look of, it's also fairly festive... and for some reason, it's yet another bird.

Dove of peace...

Xmas presents
[info]theturdmaster
I've had a few people enquire about this and to stop the whole "I'm not sure if I should buy for person X because they might not buy for me, though I'd rather not be caught out if they do give me a gift" thing that has been going on I figured that I should say something.

In general, I only buy Xmas presents for

a) Family members (cats included)
b) Friends who I've a pre-arranged agreement with (Gemma being the only person who I've got this with, we always buy each other something for Xmas & Birthdays. I tried it with Flame one year but we just ended up giving each other a DVD that we each would've bought otherwise - it wasn't a surprise so it was a bit naff! Anyway, if anyone wants one, it's fine, just MSN me and it can be arranged, just agree on a price and day to swap and we're done :) )
c) Secret santa's

March 9th.... gaming madness incoming!
[info]theturdmaster
It'll be FFXIII time, it seems that March is going to be quite a busy - and expensive month so I better get saving! I'll probably lose my life temporarily to the game as well, lol. I always do with pretty much all big RPG's.

I've just completed Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 as well, the single player campaign anyway. Needless to say that it was pro, well and truly absolutely epic... although rather short I really did enjoy it and that is the main thing really. I played it on hardened difficulty as well so that it would be more of a challenge - I'm going to give it a go on Veteran mode next (I'm going to DIE!) lol and attempt to play the multiplayer mode as it booted me off when I tried to join a game.

I thought that this image from one of the final levels was amusing... a blow up doll in the bathtub of the enemy's hideout... what are they suggesting? lol

Brent Cross - Dont bother!
[info]theturdmaster
Last Sunday my mother and I departed on a wonderful journey down the M1... ok, maybe not, the weather was absolute shit and it was a struggle just to a) keep in lane b) not waterplane like no tomorrow and c) avoid other morons on the road as visibility was down to next to bugger all.

So we get there... expecting a huge shopping centre of epic london proportions and well... it's not even as big as Luton's arndale centre, lol, we would've been better off going to Milton Keynes! On the plus side, it did have free parking everywhere.

Overall though, if you're looking for a SHITLOAD of shops and are in the London area... just go into central London, lol.

Sewing work in progress
[info]theturdmaster
I've got two projects on the go at the moment... this first one is a bit of an abstract flower scene which I thought was pretty cool and bright despite being on a fairly dull background, it's a good contrast.

The second one is a picture of two mermaids. I've only done a partial top half of one of the mermaids at the moment and due to the weirdness of the chart, I'm having to do the x stitch, backstitch and beading all at the same time, which is a bit spazzy as you'd normally just go x stitch > backstitch > beads but as the chart is a bit crap for differentiating between x stitch and beads.. and there are FUCKLOADS of beads, I figured I'd just do it all at once, it would be easier.

My camera is a bit crap for the 2nd one and the shadow of.. something got in the way, lol.

Magna Carta 2 - First Impressions
[info]theturdmaster
Queer looking blokes exposing their midrifts? Check!
Weird character models all round? Check!
A battle system that is similar to many other RPG's on the Xbox 360? Check!

Those were my first thoughts when first playing this game... on the upside, I really do like the music - it is great! and the plot isn't going along too badly despite it falling into the category of "generic". I doubt it is going to go anywhere truely epic though but it should be interesting enough to keep me stuck to it until the end of the game. It's the typical "gimp with amnesia gets wound up in a war" story.

The battle system isn't bad, although it does remind me of Infinite Undiscovery (also on Xbox) a fair bit - overall it is much better than that as it was just "run up to mob" "mash same button 5 million times" whereas here there are different moves, characters to control and switching between them and performing chains to batter enemies is fairly interesting. The voice acting is a bit naff but then again, it always is... at least there is no annoying 6yr old constantly going on about bullshit with random words (I'm looking at you Star Ocean!).

Anyway, onto the main point... check out these super stupid deformed character models... lol (the 2D art for this game is nice but the 3D models are just dumb).

On the left: Slightly queer looking bloke with an exposed midrift (put it away!!!)
On the right: Worlds queerest looking female character ever... massive hips, boobs, shoulders, tiny neck, arms, legs and head... LOL, it looks properly deformed. The male models aren't much better but they dont look THAT deformed.

On the right... yes, it is supposed to be a male character, lol.

On the left: Main queerboy this time without exposing his midrift and some better armour at least!

As my previous post was private, I've not got much else to write about now... lol

So I'll just ramble on about some gaming stuff...

But firstly Mental Note to self: Going to the gym for 3 evenings in a row is too much... only falling asleep at my keyboard can ensue from that and it's not good when it's only 10:30pm!

So anyway... onto some of my random gaming achievements/rambles..

First off, here's a screenshot from Wipeout HD on PS3... somehow I managed to get 298th in the world on this track.. fuck knows how as I didn't even think I was doing that well, lol. I've also managed to complete all courses for Wipeout HD (not fury) and get gold medals on Elite Mode which one of my colleagues at work said was impossible.

Next... and this one is a joke!

From Infamous on the PS3... It automatically ramped the difficulty up to hard because I am that good apparently... I thought I was struggling like a bitch as the controls were inverted and I couldn't hit for shit and I dont normally play this kind of GTA style game (roam a city... do whatever you want kind of thing).

Yeah... thanks, HARD mode... I normally play on the standard mode for any game.... needless to say that it was alright and I actually did manage to complete the whole game on that mode. I've now started Batman Arkham Asylum on hard too as everyone at work was saying that it wasn't really that hard (and they are right).

Random Pics...
[info]theturdmaster

I thought that was pretty amusing... the look on his face... LOL

One of my colleagues at work just had to forward this onto me as he knows I cannot resist this kind of stuff...

/drowns in pool of own dribble, lol

Quite litterally... what the fuck is Raiju doing? I have never ever seen a cat sit like this before... he was just so hunched over in this queer position, I had to take a picture!

Pro gym plan
[info]theturdmaster
Tomorrow I start my pro gym plan. It should be good, fingers crossed. I'm making sure I go to the gym at least 3 times a week, trying not to eat any shit and by shit I mean totally fatty bollocks. It shouldn't really be a problem as to be honest, I dont really eat any majorly unhealthy stuff at the moment anyway. I cant stand greasy foods such as crisps, anything cooked in grease... urgh or the worst of the worst, vine leaves in oil, argh, hate grease/oil in foods. I'd have to say that my weakness is probably chocolate but even then, I dont eat that much chocolate. Everything in moderation to be honest!

The whole idea of this really is to shift the flab from my lard arse legs... that is the goal of this whole exercise. There are other goals such as "get a 6 pack to scare people" but that's pretty damn hard and probably unachievable, lol.

I think if I lose approx 6-7lbs of flab then I can achieve my goal with my legs, get to be about 9stone 3 (which will be an all time low.. any less and I think I'll disintegrate, lol) I'm currently 9stone 11ish (just took that right now). Alrighty, I'll see how this goes!

Your skill in mechanics rises by 20points...
[info]theturdmaster
Is what is probably going to happen over the coming weeks... our family friend pro mechanic came around and had a look at my car... after dismantling a good part of the engine, we finally figured out what was wrong with it... a simple gasket has gone at the front of the engine (near a pump apparently so there is a lot of pressure there....). Not particularly hard to fix itself.. it's just all of the crap in the way that had to be removed to get to it... so we'll also be doing a cam belt change (I've no idea if that is hard). Both me and my dad have approximately zero mechanical skill combined, lol but apparently if we get the Haynes Manual and follow the instructions whilst using common sense we should be able to figure it out. It's either that or pay at least £500 to a garage to fix it for me and quite frankly... fuck that! I'd rather try the DIY and maybe lose £50 on parts if we are unsuccessful than pay £500 for it (the car isn't even worth that!).

So I entrust my car mostly to the hands of the worlds most awful mechanic aka my dad as he'll be doing most of it whilst I am at work. His previous accomplishments are a) precarious hoisting of a vectra which resulted in b) the car falling over and puncturing the oil tank so I'll be overseeing this / joining in wherever possible to make sure that he doesn't do something retarded like that as... it's my car! and I want to be ramming mofo snobs in Audi's/BMW's/shitty rovers off the road with it for many more years to come.

Sewing - Summer Fairy
[info]theturdmaster
I just completed this one the other day, my shitty arse camera has not done it justice at all as it looks like it's rippling towards the top of the photo (fuck knows why). One day I'll buy a better camera off of ebay!

It was sewn on 28 count hand dyed fabric, bought from http://www.polstitchesdesigns.co.uk/index.html and it contains a crapload of beads and metallic thread which really dont show up in the photo (crappy camera... argh).

Obsessive Compulsive Texting Disorder
[info]theturdmaster

Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh! A certain friend who shall remain nameless, although it'll become pretty obvious now when I say that it's one of my female friends (guess who, lol, I've only got one) gave out my number to someone... I dont know who but they just wont stop texting me.

I've been launching all kinds of excuses at them as they seem pretty stupid so I thought "after a while, they'll get the message and give up". I've been throwing all kinds of excuses such as "I cant make that time", "I'm out of money", "I'm going to the gym", "I'm going out to the pub with co-workers", "I'm just chilling out gaming", "I cant be arsed", "I'm too busy playing my PS3", "I'm waiting for the postman (at 7pm... yes)", "I'm stuck in the toilet", "I'm stuck in a queue", " I am at work", "I'm too busy giving birth at the hospital"... ok, ok, I did launch all of those at this person apart from the last one which is just a joke. Apart from that one though, they're all true, albeit lame excuses but it didn't really seem to matter as this person just kept texting...

I wonder if it's the good looking but excruciatingly retarded Carl Stinton? (I've posted about him before... he's the one who didn't know what MSN, an email or even a PC was) who she gave my number to... he's the only person who a) loves me that much for an unknown reason and b) has that magnitude of retardation that he just wouldn't get it.

Anyway, at about 4pm today after having not text him back, I received 5 texts in one hour. This finally managed to annoy me enough to decide that it was time to verbally puncture his aorta. So far... my insulting reply seems to have worked *fingers crossed*.

And that should be the end of that! Note to self: Kick friend for giving out my number

I thought it was the end of it but this bugger already had me on MSN somehow (my list of contacts is colossal, I dont even know who half the people on it are) I thought they were someone else because they'd got the same name as about 4 other people on my MSN, lol. So the convo started off with me being fairly friendly and then when I realised who he was my tone changed completely. When questioned about all of the text messages and that he seemed to be quite stalker-like he said "I thought you were just busy" and then I thought "What? with that number of excuses... how thick are you?" Very thick it seemed as the next thing he said was "can I see your webcam?" to which I replied "you dont need to see my webcam". I'm pretty sure he blocked me then, lol so I just blocked/deleted him and went "thank fuck for that!". Honestly, what is it with these generic fuckers where all they have to say is "can i see ur picture and can i see ur webcam?" NO! Fuck off, if you want some porno... go elsewhere, this is the internet, my picture is irrelevant. Yes, it helps but when it's the FIRST thing that people keep asking for... pft, just start a normal conversation and then politely work that question in somewhere and the request may actually be obliged (for a photo anyway, webcam is too much info).

I couldn't think of a title...
[info]theturdmaster

It's just another week in the weird arse circus playground complete with frilly flappers for me.

Not a lot has happened since Monday and to be honest, I dont really have anything that is too interesting to talk about. Well, I say that but somehow I'll probably go off on a tangent at some point in the near future... otherwise this is going to be a very short post.

I've had some good conversations on MSN this week - I dont usually LJ too much about MSN convos... especially with people whom I've never met in real life as they are hmm.. usually a fluctuating pile of queerness, who knows where they could go. Occasionally, you get one and it makes you think... about a whole host of different things that you'd maybe not contemplated for a while and then you think some more and hmm, it actually becomes slightly intreguing which is really quite rare. Like one of those transcendental moments when you realise something that had eluded you for so long. Anyway, that is enough about that.

I've had a good book to read and it's a shame that there are no more Odd Thomas books after Odd Hours which I am about 100 pages away from finishing. I really do like the Odd Thomas books for some reason, the first one drew me in and well... here I am reading book no4... wishing that there was book no5 on the horizon.

I have finished my current sewing project. I will take some pictures when I get around to it. Funnily enough, I woke up at 5.45 this morning and I was dreaming of beads... lol. I shifted my arse to work for 7am, it is exams day here y'see so I was in super early in order to help all of the schools import their exam results and print off various reports / results sheets. Considering how long the day has been, it hasn't dragged too much as we've had a fairly steady influx of calls until this afternoon when I somehow managed to get my cases down to zero.

I've taken some photos of my work but I left my memory card reader at work... lol ><

Consequences & Romance
[info]theturdmaster

See this website...

boymeetscatgirl.blogspot.com/2009/01/ep-17.html

It is so true. People just do random shit and then they wonder why the hell people get annoyed because they didn't even contemplate that there may be meaning to what they just did and subsequently consequences to their actions.

LARP.. The Forest is trying to kill me!
[info]theturdmaster

LARP... yes, thats Live Action Role Playing. If you've seen the film 'Role Models' which I actually thought was a fairly decent comedy (yes, omfg, I'm actually endorsing a comedy, it's going to snow... watch out!) then you'll have seen it and have a vague idea of what it is.

It's basically where you dress up in... whatever you feel like really, wack some armour on, go as a slightly queer elf, dance round as a mad hypnotherapist snail-mace wielding clown (ok, maybe not) or just make a kick arse warrior priest like I did in the end, lol.

So, ye olde dress up aside, next comes the weapons, they seem to be made out of slightly hardened foam. They dont really hurt when you get wacked with them, although they might hurt a bit if you get hit in the eye >< but everywhere else is all good. I got wacked in the leg/arms/chest numerous times and I dont even have any bruises on the day after. The biggest damage danger... for me anyway, is actually walking into trees, or even better... slamming my arm into a tree ><, I actually managed to draw a bit of blood from that one. Getting entangled up in thorny crap around your legs/feet can also be a pain. The forest is trying to kill me... /run away!

Apart from that, there's a bit of storyline & banter along with some other stuff, like casting spells and setting traps which I'm still a bit clueless/oblivious to as I'd got no idea what the hell was going on. All in all, I thought it might be a bit too nerdy for me before I went actually but it was pretty good fun! Ok, so it is a bit of a hardcore nerdy thing but since when has that stopped me? I might not look like a blatent nerd but I'm probably one of the worst offenders when it comes to constantly playing games/hugging my PS3 and bumming my PC, lol.

Everyone there was pretty friendly and helpful to me and the new guy who had also never done it before. Jesus really does have a bit of a theatrical side which I'd never seen before and well... I just cant help myself, in my head I was laughing my arse off almost 24/7, it's just so funny. Not that it is specifically a comedy act, just compared to everyone else.. who isn't really taking it too seriously, haha!

I'll have to get myself some decent armour/weapons...

Week off work, w00t!
[info]theturdmaster
This week I've had off work... hence this post at 1:30am, lol. I've not really been up to much to be honest as I just took a week off for the hell of it as I'd got a crapload of holiday to take and about 3 months ago, this felt like a good date for some reason. Overall, I have just been crafting, gaming and going to the gym (bodypump as usual). On Wednesday I went to London with my mum which was alrighty, I bought some cat earrings which are really cute, I might take a photo of them as they are really cute.

I also finished off building my server, here is a photo of the amount of dust that was stuck in the heatsink of my old processor after I unscrewed the fan... that seriously could not have been good for ventilation...

My new machine is an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.40ghz with 8GB RAM, I've got 2.3TB HD space in it and a Geforce 9800GTX+ which I am contemplating SLi-ing with my old Geforce 8800GTS (as it's really no use in my server as I wont be using the 8800 for any hardcore gaming and I can just buy a cheap £30 card for it..). Windows 7 which I have been using for the past few weeks is great, it is much better than Vista, it does look very similar, however it is not the same as Vista seems to manage to aggrovate me with some of the placings of features whereas Windows 7 is much better, they aren't so hidden away in niggling annoying hard to find places.

Ignore the floppy disc error.. that is simply because I dont have one, lol. I disabled it in the BIOS and continued to install Windows 7...

And of course... Raiju had to get in on the action... by crawling in my PSU box...

Apart from that, it's been a bit of an -_- week with the aura of incoming arguments/moans/ape shit rampages ever present and lingering around. This is basically caused by my parents arguing... it is always the same old shit when my dad is unemployed, he sits around the house, not really doing a lot, if he does go outside to do something, he gets virtually nothing done. My mum gets pissed off with him sitting around doing nothing so she tells him to do something and to make a contribution, he doesn't do whatever it is that she asks (and they're not hard tasks, it's often just "feed the cats" or "clean the bathroom") but he doesn't do it and that starts an argument. The other arguments are caused by money and finances as obviously, there is no money coming in and the pot (if there even is a pot.. I dont know) is being drained. The fact that he wont even seem to accept a job unless it meets a certain rate is ridiculous because... as a contractor... some money is better than no money at all... yes? Yes! Bloody idiot.

Wobbly Legged Meowch
[info]theturdmaster

That's how Raiju was when he'd returned from the Vets... so drugged up on catty anasthetic, it was like watching a drunken sailor stumbling round on a ship in the middle of a storm. The poor meowch had to go to the vets because he'd got something hanging out of his arse and they wanted to give him a colonoscopy to see what the heck it was.

It was a mental weekend as we had to starve him for 48hrs beforehand (although he clawed his way to some food twice on the second day) constant meowing, jumping around, getting everywhere. Fortunately the vet said that it was nothing serious and all they did was have a prod around inside there, apparently he's had a prolapse. More info available on Wikipedia below... but basically, my cat's arse has slightly fallen out of place... ><

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prolapse

It's nothing major in his case, we just need to feed him some oily tuna now and then to ensure that everything down there is well lubricated so he doesn't get constipated and make the condition worse.

On another subject, all of this, including about 5 consultations cost £120... all I can say is.... thank heck for pet insurance!

General Gaming Ramble
[info]theturdmaster
I've started some new games in the past week or so... quite a few, I am trying to keep them down to about 3 at a time but I've got about 5 on the go at the moment, lol. I usually try and just keep it to one RPG at a time but I'm currently playing 4, lol!

I commenced playeth of Tales of Vesperia after I'd completed Star Ocean: Last Hope which wasn't too bad actually, I am tempted to write a full review for it... just because I've not written one in ages (and to see if I still can write fairly decent reviews). I'd probably have to give it a 7/10, maybe a 7.5, as it definitely doesn't deserve an 8 but hmm, maybe a 7 is too low.

Tales of Vesperia is nice, yes, it is another fairly happy bright game in the "tales of" series. I like it better than Tales of Legendia already! I've not played Tales of the Abyss yet so I cant comment on that one. Not sure if it's better than Symphonia... that was a damn good game, it's a shame they severely cocked up the sequel on the Wii. The characters each have their own distinct personalities and traits, unlike the characters in Star Ocean and the skits just help to add to this and fill out the situation and different characters views on various matters within the game. Graphically, it's pretty good, not as nice as Eternal Sonata though as it's semi-cel shaded but then again, when you think that the game is only on one dvd disc, it's quite impressive.

Battles work in a similar way to the previous tales games, although there is an aspect of 3-d fighting this time as you can hold down a button and run anywhere you want on the map rather than just backwards and forwards as before. Unfortunately, some parts of the battle system are a bit slow - particularly the blocking, you have to be fully stopped and even then it takes a while to actually get into the block position. Musically, it's a fairly standard affair so far.

On PS2 I started Persona 3 as George keeps raving about the whole series - that and I've had it long enough that I should have started it years ago, lol. It starts off pretty confusing but it all begins to make sense as everything is gradually explained and hey, it's actually quite cool. A tad on the dark side but Persona games usually are a bit that way inclined, lol. The music is... omg, probably the best music that I have ever heard in a game, it's more like actual songs rather than the drab half-arsed tunes which populate most RPG's and I've got to say, it works surprisingly well. Best soundtrack ever so far.. Graphically it's not bad, a mix of 3d characters with a splash of 2d, fairly traditional RPG. The battle system seems interesting but I've not really fought much yet, I've spent more time farting round the school trying to raise my stats and social links than anything else. Persona's are cool too, it's a bit disturbing that the character shoots themselves in the head every time they need to summon one's abilities though.

PC: I've installed The Last Remnant - not a bad game but the Xbox version was bloody frustrating with it's slow as shit loading times. It doesn't play too badly on the PC as after all, it's just a running around / tactical battle game which can easily suit either a controller or a keyboard.

PS3 wise I am currently ploughing through Disgaea 3 which once you start playing... gets to be damn addictive very quickly. I'm also on a mission to try and get gold on elite mode on every track... I'm currently exactly half way through it and on area 5, it's getting hard!

Wedding... Urgh...
[info]theturdmaster

Just your usual boring obligatory family wedding where nobody has any clue who you are as you haven't seen any of them for the past 15yrs, lol.

Everyone wants to try and hug you and well... thats it, once they've tried to smarm you with their nasty wrinkly gobs, they then bugger off and seem to have no more questions. No "So, what have you been doing for the past 15 years? What are you doing now?" etc, they just walk off!

The groom was so blatently roped into the marriage as well, the bride was 5 months pregnant and has a child... no, adult who is almost my age... and she's about 35. That only speaks one thing to me "you moron! why did you shag that? were you that desperate that you wanted to get lumbered with... that? Urgh, some people just dont think!

Anyway, it was bloody boring, I spent most of the time just camped playing my PSP/DS.

Pic of me in my pro wedding gear.  I look like a bit of a twat but it's the best photo of the lot.
